The Nanning Museum, designed by Shanghai-based design studio COORDINATION ASIA, plays a vital role in collecting and preserving Nanning’s unique multi-cultural heritage, as well as being a platform for cultural exchange. Located in the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the building sits in a relatively challenging site near the Yongjiang riverside, with Qingxiu Mountain as a backdrop. Designed to serve as a catalyst for economic development, the sustainable building will adapt over time to build long-lasting and meaningful relationships with its community.
The building's form takes the shape of an almond tree leaf in reference to the ever-green garden city of Nanning, and also resembles the feather of a phoenix. The 20,000 sqm museum includes many flexible spaces and offers rooms for changing exhibitions and events. Overall there are 8,000 sqm of exhibition space with 120 multimedia installations and 800-1000 exhibits. There is a mixture of historical objects, state-of-the art technology and cutting-edge display methods – all set alongside a content driven program of activities. Distinctive themes have been organised to evoke important historical facts, such as the Beiqiu culture, the Maritime Silk Road, and the Anti-Japanese War. Furthermore, the design is emotionally driven to make the museum experience both immersive and interactive.
''The Nanning Museum tells the whole story of the city, from its prehistoric age to its plans for the future. The local culture is fascinating and very rich, and the museum has a strong responsibility to convey all the aspects of its local traditions,” explains COORDINATION ASIA designer Francois Aubret.
Museums traditionally focus on the display of objects, but COORDINATION ASIA aimed to tell the story of the local people in a more emotive way. Features of the museum include an immersive archeology simulation with interactive tables and holographic displays, a folk song theme hall with its own recording studio, permanent exhibitions to celebrate Nanning’s pioneers and the city’s historical development, a holographic installation of Nong Zhi Gao's soldiers, alongside workshops, food and beverage areas, and events spaces.
The vibrant personality of the local culture is exhibited in the Nanning Museum. It is a place where people will visit and want to return again and again. The city’s heart and soul is embodied in the museum, shown through its strong cultural history and exciting possibilities for the future.
