The Musagetes Design Library is part of the University of Waterloo Library System dedicated to architecture books, periodicals and a rare book archive; which integrates closely with the larger School of Architecture. The front door of the library is a custom engineered 8’x10’ cantilevered glass door suspended in a steel frame which is counter-balanced across bearing pivots by a 900-pound steel ballast.
The custom library shelves are treated like walls to create intimate carrel spaces for students to work. A long wood tatami-mat bench runs along the entire length of the library looking over the river; while both sides of the library have similar 100’ long wood work surfaces which are flanked by bookshelves to create quiet reading nooks. As one walks through the space, the shelves create a cinematic frame-by-frame view of the Grand River.
