The Brief: A unique alternative to the typical vineyard cellar door.
Design Response: To seamlessly blend with the surrounding environment and create a space that responds to the expanse of adjacent vines while embracing the use of vernacular materials.
The design echoes the traditional post-and-wire structures used to support the vines with massive timber members, assembled as a portal frame, used throughout the wine tasting and food preparation areas.
Much of the construction uses reclaimed materials including old weathered beams from a sheep shearing shed and timber floor boards from a nearby village hall.
The exterior incorporates vernacular materials and is clad with galvanised corrugated tin in a traditional deep profile. The ceiling is highly detailed to provide thermal insulation as well as sound attenuation in what would otherwise be a loud space.
The dining area offers a contrasting atmosphere with lowered ceilings and contemporary materials.
