Brief : To create a brand identity for the new entrant Monsoon Salons and position them with a unique language concurrent with their work philosophy in an already overcrowded sector of salons/spas and to do so with a budget of Rs 2500/ per sqft maximum to make feasible chains and the business model.
Socio-Cultural Context | a soothing environment where the use of wood planks and white washed brick walls with controlled lighting intends to relax the senses, a much needed environment in the loud metropolis of Delhi.
Concept Monsoon in India has multiple connotations to multiple cultures. Some look at it as an onset of cool winds after the scorching summer heat and for others it represents the cleansing by those monsoon showers which clean to reveals the nature at its pure. Pure and unadulterated. It is this idea of the post monsoon shower washing out all the grime and what emerges is a cleansed sparkling, gleaming, rejuvenated feel that we tried to imbibe in the spirit of the interior spaces for the salons at Punjabi Bagh and Rajouri Garden in New Delhi for Monsoon salons. This concept is evident in the use of Materials , Recycled Shipping pellets , exposed RCC finish, Railway sleeper recycled wooden partitions epoxy floors, mdf cut walls, the trademark Jaali work created in MS laser Cut as sliding panels, the display shelf in MS and glass and beautiful use of brickwork to create seclusion for the hamaam and massage section atop a dry zen garden instantly transporting the customer miles away from the artifice of daily life and pollution into a natural haven for the senses.
Interior Space planning : As you enter , the first thing you notice is the beautifully rusted signage of Monsoon cast on the concrete floor. The feel is beautiful at the entrance with cascading slivers of natural light lighting up the reception and the salon section unlike the artificially lit typical salons. This feeling of openness and light is emphasised by clean epoxy floors with the display shelf and in-lit mirrors all being suspended from the ceiling keeping the floor clean and furniture floating and light.
The partitions are created with sliding “ Bright Red Monsoon MS Jaali Work which looks like letters of monsoon spilling down across a glass pane and wooden planks which create the privacy but let light pass through making it light and airy. The ‘Jaalis’ casts beautiful ever changing pattern and shadows across the clean epoxy floor throughout the day
The background is exposed brick painted white or left bare to create a beautiful base for light and shadows. A single signage wall in the Pedi-spa area is MDF cut letters on an MDF base. More textures are visible as opposed to a fairly clean and neutral colour palette barring splashes of the Red corporate colour of Monsoon.
MS plate monsoon stencilled logo is burnished across the salon on the wooden Pallets and other areas as signage makes it an instant connect with the brand and a sense of ownership space for the staff of the salon as well
The spaces are planned as a continuous open plan divided in three distinct sections; hair styling as dry areas, pedicure and shampoo stations as wet areas and a spa with shower facilities. To emphasize on the post monsoon idea, each material has been kept to its pure form. There is an extensive use of natural materials such as exposed concrete, brickwork and rough cut wood planks reclaimed from the shipping pallets. This idea is further strengthened by a clean open ceiling where even the electrical conduits and the ac duct form a branching pattern with the final drama created by the macro proportioned light fixtures that hang like tulips in the rain; created out of reclaimed loudspeakers popularly known as “Bhompoos” in India.
The styling stations with bold rough wood in -lit frames represent a larger than life ‘ movie star” image where looking at yourself is celebrated through the scale of the mirror and its frame. The areas such as the manicure/ pedicure stations attain privacy as needed by the sliding metal screens created by laser cutting of steel plates with an over repetition of the monsoon logo in its various manifestations, distorting and dripping under a wash of the rain. These screens not only achieve privacy for certain sections but also, act as installations creating the much needed graphical drama within the industrial looking space.
Finally moving to the Hammam / Spa section of the salon which uses beautiful use of brickwork and controlled lighting intends to relax the senses to create seclusion for the hamaam and massage section. The exposed patterned brickwork is lit with 100s of small candles and aromatics atop a dry zen garden instantly transporting the customer miles away from the artifice of daily life and pollution into a natural haven for the senses
