REEF is IwamotoScott's entry in the MoMA PS1 annual invited design competition for an installation in the PS1 courtyard, the Young Architects Program. Our proposal reinterprets the space and atmosphere of the aqueous world just beneath the ocean's surface. The mounds are proposed to be built with CNC-milled plywood, while the canopies, consisting of 2300 unique fabric modules suspended from lenticular cable trusses spanning across the existing concrete courtyard walls. The CNC-cut fabric modules sway with the summer breeze, creating an ever-changing dappled light and shade pattern reminiscent of the caustic reflections seen on the ocean floor in shallow waters.
