This light-filled two-story penthouse in located at the top of a 14-story multi-use building in Iowa City. Floor to ceiling glass wraps the space and allows north, east and south light to fill the space and offers the panoramic views of the Midwest city and countryside beyond.
A unique feature of the space is that it can function as one large 4,300 s.f. space or can be divided into two private units by way of a series of translucent glass panels that travel along ceiling tracks at three locations. When the glass panels are not in use, they tuck neatly away into a slot in the wall. This solution allows the flexibility that the owners required while allowing daylight to be shared even when the dividing walls are closed.
Traditional walls are minimal and are kept to the core of the space, which further promotes maximization of daylight and views. The kitchen utilizes precise German engineered cabinetry with no wall cabinets to obstruct views. All appliances are integrated into the cabinetry to maintain a clean aesthetic.
Public and guest quarters are on the lower level while private spaces are located on the upper level. The interior is nearly doubled by extensive terraces, which wrap arguably four sides of the residence.
