After fifty years in their home, our clients approached us to design a single-level renovation to provide a safe environment for them to age in place, while taking advantage of the site that nourished them all those years. Previous additions lacked a uniform vision, resulting in ten level changes making it difficult for the aging owners to navigate.
Of particular value was the original classic one-room-wide, two-story Homestead crafted by German settlers with concrete blocks cast on site in the 1930s. In order to preserve this structure, which represented the heart of the home, we removed all previous additions and designed a new home to delicately embrace the original homestead. Only touching the existing structure through the use of sliding glass walls, we were able to bathe the structure in natural daylight while symbiotically illuminating the structure at night.
The newly constructed series of one room wide gables recall the original building principles of that time while the transparent, stepping form respectfully honors the homestead and the oak lined landscape. Drawing on historical precedence and honored traditions, this project simultaneously provides all the modern comforts while effortlessly evoking the emotion and joy brought by the collective memories of the place.
