Emerging from the third floor of the Related Company’s new 60-story complex near Times Square, HM White has designed a pair of unique outdoor garden terraces hovering over the bustling city streets. The terraces link building interior amenity spaces with a series of outdoor garden rooms configured for variety of uses by the residents of more than 800 rental and condominium apartments.
North TerraceThe 9,000 square-foot north terrace is a long linear space overlooking 42nd street and wrapping the eastern end of the tower. A contiguous meadow landform unifies the terrace as it undulates across its surface and articulates a series of social “pods” surrounded by meandering columnar tree groves, curved vine screens and evergreen hedges. The pods provide flexible spaces and furnishings for day and evening activities ranging from outdoor lounging, gaming and dog play to grilling, private dining and events.
South TerraceThe 5,400 square-foot south terrace design modulates diverse structural slab elevations to create a seamless outdoor extension of interior lap pool and fitness facilities while accommodating ADA accessibility. A system of linear steel planters weaves through the terrace to emphasize shifting surface elevations and support a grove of Quaking Aspen trees and deciduous shrub massings complimented by a blend of tall reeds, grasses and seasonal flowers. Organized around a central sloping lawn flanked by elevated decks for sun-bathing and casual lounging by day, the terrace transforms into an outdoor movie theater and event space in the evening.
