Mercury Fitness

Firm
YEAR
2006
Mercury Fitness had been operating out of a rented residential space, but wanted to expand their business, bringing on more trainers and clients to make pilates more accessible. In a basement space with a limited budget, we were able to develop a language of selective furring-out of the interior to provide both clean, colorful surfaces as well as ambient lighting for the space.  The geometry of repeated angles is a reinterpretation of the idea of balance so integral to pilates - rather than the typical circle motif, the space incorporates repetitive angular elements that create a tension but also balance as they compliment each other across the space.  The space has become part of the brand image of the gym since it opened in May 2006.Architects: Ashdown Downey LLP, San Francisco, CA
