Sejong Convention Hall
Common Space in Sejong Convention Hall: The Sejong Hall in Sejong Cultural Center is a space that directly meets the road along with the art museum and the theater lobby. The lobby of the theater is difficult to open to the public at all times due to the characteristics of the theaters (increase of the floating population at specific times and separated space for their services), but in the case of museums and Sejong Hall, it is a space that has the potential to induce contact and communication with citizens through everyday openness. The dark and disconnected Sejong Cultural Center was planned to be a bright and communicative space through the remodeling of the Sejong Convention Hall.
Communicate with Gwanghwamun Square.
As we tried to change the private space of Sejong Hall to a more public space called the Sejong Convention Hall, the first plan we created was to design the internal program to be recognized from the outside for communication, thereby naturally inducing citizen's visit. It was planned as a place to stay and communicate by inducing the inflow of citizens through information wall.
Go to the art garden from Gwanghwamun Square.
The second plan for communication is the restoration of the urban context through the restoration of the disconnected roads between Gwanghwamun Square and the art garden, which is the back of Sejong Cultural Center. Sejong Cultural Center connects the front and back roads through the central stairway on the second floor, but the flow of the city is disconnected without any connection to the ground level. In addition, The arts gardens remain as a garden that is currently unavailable due to plantings that is currently disconnecting gates at Gwanghwamun Station and pedestrians. By restoring this path, events and enthusiasm at Gwanghwamun Square will be transmitted to the arts gardens through the internal roads, and it will be a space for citizens without the abandoned space.
Go to the main theater at Sejong Convention Hall. Go to the museum.
The third communication is the communication of internal programs (Grand Theater, Art Museum and Convention Hall) which is the most important. Through the connection of the public facilities, citizens at the theater can visit the museum, and people at the convention hall can naturally visit the exhibitions and move to Gwanghwamun Square and the arts gardens. In addition, we planned the public space of the convention hall located at the intersection between the Grand Theater and the museum as a space where people could stay for a while, rest and relax, and maximize communication.
Sejong Convention Hall
The convention hall is a facility that should functionally prioritize the blocking of sound because it is in contact with the performance hall and the public space of the art gallery. The exterior walls of the convention hall are designed as functional walls that can be used for sound insulation, and the interior walls are designed with a functional space that can be used flexibly according to the size of the convention hall by using double moving walls with sound insulation function.
Toilets in main theater lobby
The convention hall lobby and the main theater lobby were cut off by the female toilets for the theater. This toilets had to be inevitably torn down in order to communicate between the two spaces, and therefore had to be relocated and extended because they were insufficient before. They are located in a convenient place for visitors to the venues, avoiding interfering communication. Mirrors and lightings in the waiting area are used to reduce the boredom of standby time and a woman-specific powder room was designed to achieve a dispersion effect. We improved the disadvantages of low flooring inside of the toilet through exposed ceilings.
