The Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh Municipal Building, a landmark civic structure built in the 1980s, has been in need of renewal after decades of service. Its original full-glass façade, while modern for its time, has suffered from persistent rainwater seepage that remained unresolved despite numerous rectification attempts. The west-facing orientation also subjected the building to the harsh evening sun, resulting in excessive heat gain and discomfort for its occupants.
Recognising the need for a long-term solution, the council commissioned a comprehensive façade transformation. Kuee Architecture, appointed as Lead Consultant, proposed a semi-glass façade system that strikes a balance between transparency, durability, and thermal performance. The design integrates tinted fixed glass panels, insulated ACP cladding, and operable casement windows — ensuring improved weatherproofing, energy efficiency, natural ventilation, and compliance with fire safety requirements for escape and maintenance access.
The façade is reimagined with a refined silver palette in multiple tones, complemented by bold yellow accents that echo the official colours of Perak. Beyond aesthetics, the introduction of perforated ACP panels at strategic eye levels preserves panoramic views of Ipoh city while reducing glare and improving occupant comfort.
This revitalisation project is more than a technical upgrade — it represents the council’s commitment to modernising civic infrastructure while respecting the building’s role as an enduring municipal landmark.
