Main idea
“Educational Center” – The new building of the Martin-Behaim-Gymnasium ensemble forms an educational center with a striking center as a counterpart to the Meistersingerhalle. As a coherent ensemble along Schultißallee, the MBG and the adjacent “Neues Gymnasium Nürnberg” (NGN) form an educational cluster, which is functionally brought together via an articulated building for the cafeteria and the gymnasium. Traffic calming and avoidance of through traffic enables a connection across the previously dividing Weddigenstrasse street space. Through the renovation of the NGN and the associated redesign of an access building to the NGN, this connection will be upgraded to a forecourt situation with an entrance to the cafeteria and a shared gym. This creates a coherent educational area that forms a cultural counterpart to the Meistersingerhalle, which has also been upgraded.
Urban planning concept:
The school building, as the head building of a three-part building formation that is structured around an open area, serves to create a clear address as a counterpart to the Meistersingerhalle and the urban development highlight of the “N-Ergie high-rise”. The three school buildings, sports hall and cafeteria form a protected open area, which is bordered on the fourth side by the Fischbach and its natural barrier as a renatured green space. In this open area, the schoolyard is a paved outdoor area, a football pitch and an outdoor terrace of the cafeteria are enclosed as a spatial sequence from west to east. Thematically and spatially, the cafeteria serves as a connection to the NGN educational space, which, by moving the edge of the building, creates a square-like situation across Weddigenstrasse to the NGN school location.
