The project at Marktstrasse 14 in Hohenems combines old and new and shows how sustainable urban development and respect for history can revitalize a district. This involves integrating the existing building and implementing a concept that takes the context of the historic building into account. It is important not only to preserve the external appearance of the building, but also its internal structure.
The colorful accentuation and the play with plaster patterns give the project a harmonious overall appearance that blends into the context of Marktstrasse. On the street side, the existing building was renovated and restored to its original state, taking into account the listed building status. On the courtyard side, a new brick building was added, which acts as a link between the existing and neighboring buildings.
The single-storey middle section of the new building in the courtyard area blends harmoniously into the ensemble and offers additional living space. The surfaces and materials of the new building were adapted to the existing building, creating a harmonious overall appearance.
The existing building mainly houses commercial units, while apartments were created in the new building. The building has a district heating connection and also focuses on sustainability and regional products in the choice of materials.
