Flat and dynamic at the Thurgauerstrasse with its residential buildings from the fifties, graded and abstractly grassed over to the reverse of the neighboring building with parking garage at the Geiselweidstrasse, high, open and inviting at the Werkstrasse directly vis-a-vis the existing manufacturing enterprise Maag Recycling, bevelled and smoothed to the traffic roundabout and finally abruptly truncated neighboring the railway line, the built volume presents itself as a sculptural urban structure ready to be further developed.
The expression and form of the new building is a subtle reaction to the prevailing urban situation and a clear interpretation and distribution of the five programs, this whilst simultaneously maximising the use of the perimeter.
The tension between the conventional and the industrially preassembled materials help mold the building. It is the tension between raw, prefabricated concrete - the primary structure- and the fine cloak, a negligee of steel mesh, diagonal wickerwork, that envelopes the building. This cloak fulfills different roles both functional and aesthetic. It is simultaneously burglary, and crash protection, as well as defining the very individual character of the new building.
According to visual angle the negligee is either fully transparent, revealing the raw structure of the building, or it transforms the volume into a single solid glowing body.Unsatisfactory and tight space allocations, as well as inadequate water closet facilities demanded drastic renovations in the change room area. The once dark and confined staff room was replaced by a light flooded addition. Spaciousness and friendliness in the work place is clearly communicated through this newly gained space. The functionality of this area has been optimized by dividing the space into two distinct areas, the change room and the wash and toilet facilities. All the rooms appear to be dipped in the company green to shoulder height. Gleaming white sanitary and lighting fixtures bring a dynamic contrast to the rooms. Ecological and economical considerations are integral components of the concept and the realization of the project.
