Timber-framed buildings in France
THE RHYTHM OF THE CITY
Bridge building in Paris-St. Denis
In Saint-Denis’s Pleyel quarter, on the site of what was once Europe’s largest piano factory, Baumschlager Eberle Architekten are currently developing two high-rise and several other buildings on the bridge that spans Saint-Denis railway station. The project belongs to our Paris office and is part of the larger “Lumières de Pleyel” consortium venture (other partners include Chaix & Morel et Associés, Ateliers 2/3/4/, Mars Architectes, Maud Caubet Architectes and Moreau Kusunoki under the direction of Norwegian firm Snøhetta).
Rhythm forms the architectural leitmotif of the Lumières de Pleyel project. The silhouette of the bridge – and of the high-rise buildings on the old factory site – is reminiscent of a keyboard, its rising and falling volumes suggesting movement. Timber was chosen as the primary material for the project because it performs several functions simultaneously, being light, elegant and sustainable. The buildings, with their shared tactile timber framework and delicate glass membranes, seem to march across the bridge. Meanwhile, their functionally neutral organisation injects life into the urban space, where the ground floor is given over to semi-public use, including shops and cafés.
