ABOUT
Lumen Craft Gastro is a family café located on the busiest pedestrian alley in the Rîșcani district of Chișinău. The interior and exterior reflect a sense of openness, cleanliness, and natural simplicity. This is expressed through the minimalist design of the façade and terrace, as well as the large glass panels that offer a full view of the dining area and part of the food preparation and serving process.
EXTERIOR
The primary color palette of the walls, textures, and materials is a soft, milky shade. Against the vibrant urban surroundings, this choice makes the café’s façade and interior stand out in a refined way.
The café is situated in the basement level of a residential building, slightly elevated above the pedestrian alley. This presented certain challenges in designing the outdoor seating area. To address this, we integrated compact tables along the parapet, incorporating built-in planters with greenery and discreetly concealing the outdoor air conditioning units.
INTERIOR
The café's interior is fully visible from the street and consists of several key areas: a service and open kitchen station, the main dining space, and a dedicated children's zone.
One of the most significant design discoveries in this project was the use of local Moldovan Coșăuți stone. Its warm, light tones and natural veins were masterfully crafted into a striking, contemporary wall finish. Additional hand-texturing enhanced its three-dimensional effect, playing with light and shadow throughout the space.
Wood also plays a major role in the interior. Diagonally cut wooden panels start from the façade’s display window and continue inside, covering sections of the ceiling and walls. A centerpiece of the space is a large wooden communal table, designed to host frequent family gatherings and celebrations.
Another defining element is the use of woven rattan. This natural material forms a decorative composition of three pendant lights of varying sizes, welcoming guests at the entrance.
KIDS ZONE
The children’s area is clearly visible through the café’s glass entrance. Its key features include a house-shaped shelving unit and a central table with an integrated planter, home to a living olive tree.
TECHNOLOGY
The service counter and food station are not only functional elements but also integral parts of the interior design.
The workflow is designed along the length of the café. It begins with a refrigerated display featuring cured meats, cheeses, and craft beer produced by Lumen Craft, which is visible to guests through a glass panel. The process continues with a beer station mounted on a stone counter, where the beer lines are cleverly integrated into a wooden log. The sequence concludes at the cash register, which features two display cases, allowing staff to serve both indoor and outdoor customers.
Behind the cashier, a wooden shelving unit showcases freshly baked goods.
A special note of appreciation goes to the café’s management and project team. Many of the unique design solutions and original elements were made possible through our shared enthusiasm, attention to detail, and a relentless curiosity in developing sketches, samples, and concepts.
