A new focal point for the working-class Barrou district, Halle Louis Marty contributes to Sète’s wider appeal by providing a covered venue with a capacity of 1,600 seats.
The renovation and extension project addresses three main objectives:
- to provide users with a high-quality space, primarily Arago, Sète’s legendary volleyball club;
- to support the local volleyball team by meeting the hosting requirements set by the European League; - to make the venue a gathering place for sport and culture in all their forms.
A high degree of versatility was required: concerts, sporting events, galas, political gatherings, Arago training sessions, school activities, and more. The architecture responds to its context and builds upon the existing infrastructure: two stands have been retained, while two new ones have been added to complete and enclose the arena.
The architectural narrative is popular, playful, and inviting. Between the midnight-blue timber frame, the aluminium scale-like cladding evoking the scales of the grey mullet, and the windows nicknamed “fried whiting eyes”, the new Halle Louis Marty addresses the Étang de Thau, which borders the Barrou district, with wit and passion.
The atmosphere is distinctly marine and maritime. The fervour of the supporters could be heard from Arago’s very first matches, as the team returned to its transformed historic home and reclaimed victory. A genuine collective success, opening a beautiful new chapter in the history of the city’s club.
