As the crowning masterpiece, Block E marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new one.
Urban Renewal
Yuzhong Peninsula: The Transformation of a Gateway
Where two rivers converge lies the Yuzhong Peninsula, embracing all the charm of this mountain city. With a long history, Yuzhong District is the cradle of Chongqing's roots and origins. As the birthplace of Bayu culture, it carries profound historical memories.
Daping Subdistrict, where this project is located, was an ancient post road as far back as the Ming Dynasty. Beyond the steep cliffs of Futu Pass, it served as a resting place for travelers. Thus, Daping has been both a transportation hub of old Chongqing and a geometric center of new Chongqing. Local residents have thrived here for generations, while travelers have paused to rest on their journeys. Since the Zhou Dynasty, it has witnessed thousands of years of history in the Bashan and Shushui regions.
Despite its inherent geographical advantages, Daping was once merely regarded as a transient stop, characterized by an outdated environment lacking a thriving business district. The Logistics Engineering University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was once situated here before relocating to its new campus in Chongqing University Town. In 2009, the university's old campus was demolished, and the construction of Paradise Walk commenced, marking the start of Daping's journey toward prosperity.
Over the past decade, a convenient transportation network has gradually taken shape. At the end of 2012, Phase 1 of Paradise Walk (Blocks A & B) opened, ushering in a new era of commerce in the Shiyoulu area. In early 2014, Phase 2 (Block C) debuted, joining Blocks A & B to become a premier destination for public consumption and daily life. In 2016, Phase 3 (Block D) opened its doors, introducing trendy experiential formats that revolutionized traditional shopping models. Finally, with the completion of Block E in 2022, Paradise Walk fulfilled its decade-long grand construction plan.
The Longfor Paradise Walk Chongqing series is the driving force behind the development of the Daping business district. Boasting a total gross floor area of 1.5 million square meters, it integrates dining, accommodation, transportation, sightseeing, shopping, and entertainment, standing as Asia's mega shopping center cluster spanning millions of square meters. It seamlessly incorporates nine core urban functions: leisure and shopping, administrative offices, star-rated hotels, urban luxury residences, transportation hubs, catering and entertainment, creative industries, urban squares, and cultural arts.
The dynamic advancement of commerce is inseparable from the prosperity of urban renewal. As a "city within a city", Paradise Walk aligns with the development trends of the city's core areas, constantly evolving through exploration and writing a magnificent chapter of commercial prosperity. It has transformed the outdated urban image of Daping and Shiyoulu areas, reshaped the lifestyles of surrounding residents, and turned a typical transient thoroughfare into a magnetizing destination appealing to the entire city.
Urban renewal endeavors to create a favorable environment conducive to business, living, recreation, and tourism. Through the construction of a highly functional and inclusive urban complex, the design of Paradise Walk has influenced the local area, radiated its impact across the entire city, and accelerated the urban renewal of Daping.
As a mega commercial flagship consisting of four phases and five blocks, Paradise Walk forms a self-contained "city" through the connections between its commercial islands. With its massive scale and highly integrated functions, it expands urban public space and enriches visitors' sense of experience and participation. The continuous spatial layout, undulating architectural forms, and intricate design details deliver constant visual delights.
The commercial islands are arranged along the roads, with sky corridors embedded between them to create linear connections, forming an interconnected public shared space network that allows visitors to move freely from the ground floor to the rooftop across the commercial complex.
These corridors link indoor spaces with rooftops, forming a versatile circular commercial circulation system rich in spatial experiences. They break down the barriers between Blocks C, D, and E caused by roads, achieving full commercial integration.
The towers enclose a three-dimensional urban space, with multiple layers creating a multi-dimensional urban scale. The spillover effects of its diverse functions generate a magnetic attraction to the surrounding areas. As the southern gateway of Paradise Walk, the height of Block E's towers is comparable to that of Block B, the northern gateway, ensuring the overall visual coherence of the project.
In the Paradise Walk series, Phase 1 (Blocks A & B) is positioned as an urban family fashion hub, featuring a concise, elegant, and aesthetically pleasing architectural style that initiated the classic transformation of the old city. Phase 2 (Block C) serves as a key area, designed with a central garden, landscape elements, and cultural motifs to highlight its distinctive open-block commercial format. It has become a core family entertainment shopping center and a destination for purpose-driven consumption.
Phase 3 (Block D) is positioned as a "Trendy Youth Hub", integrating a variety of experiential formats to create a series of events, experiences, activities, and trials that engage visitors around the clock. Its architectural form resembles floating ice crystals, dynamic and playful, with pure and diverse textures.
Completed in October 2022, Block E is the crowning masterpiece of the Paradise Walk series, marking the end of an era and the dawn of a new one. As the eastern gateway of the entire complex, Block E fills the last geographical gap in the Daping business district.
Block E: Planning and Layout
A Core in Its Own Right, Connected to All Sides
Block E is planned and designed as a shopping mall plus two 100-meter-tall residential towers. In accordance with the overall planning of Paradise Walk, the residential towers are arranged along the outer perimeter of the site, forming a basin-shaped spatial layout. The rooftop and outdoor spaces in the central area are seamlessly connected, providing high-quality public activity areas. The eastern side welcomes urban crowds from the adjacent roads and metro stations, while the western and southern sides connect to Blocks C and D respectively, realizing a seamless link between Daping Main Street and Changjiang 2nd Road.
The shopping mall prioritizes the accessibility of surrounding residents and visitors. It fully utilizes the urban frontages on the east, west, and south sides, with entrances strategically located facing major pedestrian flows. Through above-ground and underground connections with Blocks C and D, it forms an integrated commercial layout characterized by "a core in its own right, connected to all sides". The residential area transforms the commercial rooftop into an entrance garden, creating an independent and private activity space for residents and maximizing the living value of this commercial-residential complex.
Adhering to the planning concept of "interconnection and integrated construction" shared by all blocks, Block E is linked to the adjacent Blocks C and D via sky corridors and underground passages, achieving the overall integration of the commercial circulation system of Paradise Walk.
Block E: Design Positioning
The Geek Ark, A Trendsetting Space
During the design process of Block E, we continuously explored design motifs suitable for the last urban interface of the Paradise Walk Chongqing series, seeking possibilities for the reconstruction and enhancement of the local spatial texture. The development of the Paradise Walk series has evolved in response to the needs and changes of the times. Addressing the relative lack of entertainment and experiential formats in the overall complex, and building on the positioning of Blocks C and D, Block E has been developed into an experiential commercial center focused on entertainment and fashion-oriented formats.
Block E serves as a bridge connecting the entire project to the new era and a vision for the future. Designers have crafted a flowing, cloud-like curved facade, using soft, extended lines and futuristic geometric grid elements to create a "Geek Ark".
The design adopts a "layered cake" approach, with the mid-to-upper volume set back tier by tier, allowing the building to blend harmoniously into the urban space. This architectural form not only meets the urban setback regulations but also mitigates the sense of oppression exerted by the building's massive scale on the urban roads.
The site of Block E features a north-high, south-low topography with a height difference of approximately 6 meters between the north and south. The design fully adapts to this distinctive topographical feature of Chongqing, creating a dual ground floor access system. This design not only facilitates the entry of surrounding residents but also injects vitality into multiple floors by distributing pedestrian flow effectively.
The interior spatial design of Block E differs from the conventional single or circular circulation models of shopping malls. Instead, it adopts a futuristic sci-fi spatial node featuring a single atrium plus "urban magic boxes". These transparent, eye-catching magic box spaces boast strong display functions while ensuring visual connectivity from the back street on the south side to the atrium.
The commercial circulation routes revolve around these thematic spaces. The sense of transparency and the visual impact created by striking color contrasts immerse visitors in a high-tech atmosphere throughout the mall, as if stepping into a cyber space and facing the future directly. The main atrium, as the most prominent expression of the shopping mall, creates a digital space with cyberpunk style that echoes the topographical features of Chongqing's historical blocks yet possesses a more futuristic vibe.
Block E: Quality Facade
Layered Lines, Futuristic Aesthetics
Architecture is an expressive form of living art, embodying diverse humanistic ideas throughout history. Looking back on the 14-year design journey of the Paradise Walk series, the architectural facade design has evolved with the times: from Blocks A & B, which reinterpreted classical proportions with modern techniques, to Block C, which incorporated a wealth of modern design elements, and then to Block D, which adopted a purely contemporary facade design language. Paradise Walk has always kept pace with evolving trends. In the digital era in which Block E is situated, people are filled with a desire to explore and imagine the unknown, and thus the design has infused futuristic aesthetics into the building's appearance.
The facade of Block E is tiered and set back, extending horizontally, with fluid line designs that enhance the building's sense of dynamism. The main facade is primarily clad in diamond-patterned aluminum panels, with partial gradient three-dimensional variations, complemented by perforated patterns and dynamic lighting effects, exuding a strong sense of technology.
The interior design fully embraces the "urban magic box" theme, with box-shaped texture elements featured extensively in rest areas and entrances. The ceiling of the main entrance canopy continues this design motif, with rectangular light strips extending from the exterior to the interior, creating a strong visual guidance effect.
Ultra-white, highly transparent glass is used at the main entrance and key store display areas, delivering crystal-clear, high-fidelity visual effects. At night, the interior lighting and exhibition displays are fully visible, attracting visitors to enter.
The champagne gold diamond-shaped aluminum panels resemble concave-convex scales, and when combined with lighting, they enhance the recognition of the building facade. The soft color tone blends harmoniously with the cityscape under daylight, alleviating the sense of oppression caused by the building's large volume. The back-of-house areas utilize fritted glass that echoes the main design elements. Fritted glass offers excellent sun-shading performance, visually separating the back-of-house areas from the commercial zones while maintaining the refined and unified appearance of the facade.
Conclusion
As the crowning masterpiece of the Paradise Walk series, Longfor Paradise Walk Chongqing Block E builds on the project's mature commercial system, aligns with the pulse of the times and the city, and generates new-era synergies. While consolidating its own influence, it keeps pace with the latest trends. With its soft, flowing lines, futuristic geometric grid elements, and stunning dynamic lighting effects, Block E has created a cyber-aesthetic Geek Ark in the city.
