This new state-of-the-art library celebrates the one thing that unites everyone in the community: the majestic landscape of the Cache valley. It replaces an outdated building on the same site and is positioned to front more of Main Street to catalyze development of downtown Logan while simultaneously expanding a public plaza shared with other civic buildings. With people arriving from opposite directions, the plan narrows to bring everyone to the help desk between these entrances ensuring assistance upon arrival.
The three-story, 32,998-square-foot building is arranged to correspond with views of the surrounding landscape with the most energetic activities on the first floor (the City), less active areas on the second floor (the Neighborhood), and quiet, contemplative spaces on the third floor (the Mountains). The windows on each level are proportioned to highlight the corresponding landscape elements. Double-height spaces connect these diverse experiences to invite exploration and create a sense of continuity.
As a place of discovery, the library provides unparalleled views of the Cach Valley that inspires patrons to see familiar landmarks in new ways and brings the landscape into the space, creating an immediate and profound connection to their place in the world.
Features and amenities include:
- Large, playful children’s area on the first floor, eliminating the need for parents to manage strollers and kids on stairs and elevators. This vibrant space includes sculptural tree canopies, books shaped like butterflies, art inspired by the flora and fauna of the region, a kid-sized entry door, and a meandering path that tunnels through the bookstacks.
- Dedicated, safe teen area on the second floor, recognizing the importance of providing space for teenagers.
- Flexible community room that can be divided in half or fully opened to the lobby to accommodate a wide variety of community events.
- Variety of meeting and study spaces, tutoring rooms, and a dedicated makerspace.
- Universally accessible facilities.
- Self- and assisted-checkout options.
- Comfortable administrative spaces including a lounge, workroom, offices, and maintenance space.
- Two outdoor plazas accessed within the library to maximize patron safety.
- Exterior bricks blending with Main Street's architectural language, patterned with texture reflecting the surrounding mountains.
- Materials selected for occupant health, durability, and visual warmth.
- Designed for adaptation to future library needs, with open-span spaces allowing program rearrangement.
