This project redefines the lobby of a legendary Thai hotel, seamlessly merging its mid‑century heritage with a bold contemporary vision. The design honors its legacy while inviting a fresh, dynamic clientele—marking a transformative new era for Asia Hotel.
The original lobby—a dark, enclosed space devoid of natural light—posed a significant challenge. Rather than resisting this “black box” condition, the redesign embraces it, transforming the space into a controlled theatrical environment. A curated lighting system slowly cycles through eight moods, shifting from cool whites in the morning to golden hues at midday, deep ambers in the evening, and vibrant blues at night, creating a fluid atmosphere that evolves with the rhythm of the day.
A key challenge, mandated by the owner, was integrating five antique Murano chandeliers, hand-selected by the hotel’s founder half a century ago. Once symbols of traditional luxury, these chandeliers were reimagined as the centerpiece of a contemporary, immersive art installation rather than static relics. Inspired by their cascading crystal strands—naturally forming parabolic curves—we applied the parabola equation (Y = aX² + bX + c) to create a striking ceiling installation that extends across the lobby. Reflective ceiling panels, mirrored walls, and a six-meter mirrored bowl amplify and distort their luminous effect, transforming them into a surreal, theatrical spectacle. This design language extends to the bar, where illuminated arc-like forms reinterpret the same geometry in a vertical expression.
Traditional world clocks have been reinterpreted as interactive lighting installations reflecting real-time global sky colors, while warm terracotta floor tiles paired with industrial copper-tone finishes provide a rich interplay of textures. Balancing past and present, refinement and rawness, nostalgia and innovation, the redesign transforms the lobby into a bold statement of timeless hospitality—where history is not just preserved but reimagined for the future.
