Situated in the historic Liwa Oasis, on the edge of the Rub' al Khali Desert in Abu Dhabi’s Western Region, Liwa Farm Village emerges as a community hub where agriculture, heritage, and sustainability converge. The project reimagines ancestral knowledge while addressing contemporary ecological challenges, creating a space that strengthens cultural identity and fosters collective growth.
Rooted in the Oasis’s history, the masterplan integrates working date plantations, a veterinary area, a community farm, a Majlis for gatherings, a farm-to-table restaurant, a spa, and vernacular guest bungalows. These programs are interwoven with the landscape, forming a network of spaces that encourage social exchange, agricultural stewardship, and cultural preservation.
The design draws inspiration from the vernacular techniques that have long defined desert life. Rammed-earth walls compacted with desert sand provide thermal comfort and durability. Windcatchers (ملقف) reinterpret traditional towers that channel airflow, while aflaj (فلج) irrigation systems distribute water through underground channels, sustaining greenhouses and crops. Palm-built shelters (Arish system), applied to roofing structures, and handcrafted clay lattices (نقش شبكي) filter light and create breathable architecture. Together, these elements embody the humble ingenuity of past communities, adapted here as a framework for ecological resilience.
Materiality becomes a dialogue between past and present. Pigmented concrete platforms anchor the structures against sand drift, while lime-plastered walls and stone foundations enhance durability and continuity with the terrain. The courtyard typology "Sahn" (صحن), with shaded arcades, reflecting pools, and garden patios, connects interior and exterior spaces, creating an atmosphere of calmness and contemplation.
At its core, Liwa Farm Village positions architecture as a mediator between natural forces and human life. Buildings are shaped by desert winds, light, and the rhythm of water, turning the harsh climate into an ally. Elevated platforms, shaded porticoes, and permeable clay screens reduce energy consumption, lowering the project’s carbon footprint while enhancing comfort.
Beyond material strategies, the project emphasizes the human and social dimension. It offers spaces where local families can cultivate, gather, and celebrate traditions, while transmitting artisanal knowledge to future generations. By embedding cultural values within sustainable practices, Liwa Farm Village becomes not only a place of memory but also a blueprint for collective resilience.
The project stands as a melting place, where agricultural and human growth are preserved, cultivated, and reimagined for the future of the Oasis. It is also a reminder of the region’s artisanal heritage and cultural memory, honoring the wisdom of past communities while nurturing a shared horizon where tradition and sustainability walk hand in hand.
