This project transforms a run-down warehouse in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine district into an industrial arts centre with workshops, exhibition spaces and living units. Two features shape the overall identity of the project. On the exterior, the existing one story façade is extended into a second floor using recycled bricks from the local neighborhood. The result is a play between the rhythmic and ordered nature of the existing single story façade and the noisy and patterned sensibility of the added upper floor façade. On the interior, spaces are organized around an expansive atrium that ties the two floors together. The day-lit atrium is created by partially removing the existing roofslab by means of stitch drilling. Its extruded outline is a playful mediation between soft, swelling curvatures and the existing rigid column grid.
