Little Learners Atwood transforms a long-vacant 14,892 SF split-level beauty school in Cranston, RI into a vibrant early learning center serving 100 children from infancy through preschool. Developed in partnership with LISC Rhode Island through the Child Care and Early Learning Facilities Fund, the project responds to the region’s growing demand for accessible, high-quality childcare while revitalizing a disused community asset.
The design addresses complex accessibility and egress challenges inherent to the split-level structure. A 40-foot ramp, integrated into the outdoor play area, ensures continuous, step-free circulation between levels while doubling as an engaging feature for exploration and play. The building now includes eight new exterior doors, reconfigured interiors, and nine flexible classrooms that adapt to shifting age-group needs. Spaces are outfitted with child-scaled fixtures, interconnecting doors, and abundant natural light to support safety, independence, and collaboration.
The program also includes a gross motor skills room, conference space, and a lower-level training hub that supports RI Pre-K, Head Start, and professional development—investing not just in young learners, but in the early education workforce. While sustainability was not the primary driver, the project embraced adaptive reuse, HVAC upgrades, and low-VOC materials, creating a durable, healthy setting for families and staff alike.
