The Lijnbaanhoven is a redevelopment design for the Lijnbaan area in Rotterdam, the first pedestrian commercial area in Europe, originally planned by van den Broek en Bakema and Maaskant during the 60s.
The aim of the project and the objective of city is to revitalize the area by massively adding residential program. The current apartment buildings give their shoulders to the commercial area and the two different functions are not integrated one another, cause of a massive logistic space at the ground level.
The new project is able to mix the program: commercial space in the first two floors and apartments from the second up. The blended area between the two generates a large terrace and space for the expansion of the shopping facilities. The apartment’s balconies, depending on the orientation, are very broad, recessed or semi-recessed and have been designed for the maximum sun exposure during the afternoon.
