This single family residence was sensitively converted from an old truck-wash facility. It retains a quiet anonymous presence on the laneway. The front door opens into an impressive central garden courtyard cut out from the existing building. The main floor rooms wrap around this courtyard in a sequence of flowing spaces which draw in natural light from oversized mahogany doors and windows.
The kitchen, dining and living areas form a Great Room where the original ceiling structure is left exposed. The room culminates in a sculptural wood-burning fireplace. Polished concrete floors are warmed by radiant-in floor heat, while spiral mahogany, birch plywood, and richly hued paint colours create a warm, comfortable interior.
The custom-designed stairs rise through a double height space and incorporate built-in shelving. On the second floor, the children’s bedrooms overlook both the courtyard and the surrounding neighbourhood.
