Residence in Tinos | Creative Architects
The residence designed by Alexandra and Napoleon Dalianis, together with the entire team at Creative Architects, is situated near Triantaros in Tinos. It harnesses the local character, materiality, and topography of the landscape, composing a contemporary architectural proposal that is typologically aware.
The design was initiated by the presence of two wild mulberry trees already existing on the 6.5-acre plot, which offers an open view towards Delos. The topography and the prevailing wind directions were decisive factors in shaping the orientation and protection of the building.
The architectural composition places the residence at the eastern edge of the plot, with its main axis oriented toward the beach of Agios Sostis and aligned conceptually with the sanctuary of Delos. The entrance is organized through a semi-outdoor space functioning as a pronaos—an intermediate threshold between the residence and the landscape. The central courtyard is protected on the western side by a cantilevered volume, which acts as a windbreak.
The exterior masonry is both structural and built from local stone, directly referencing the dry stone walls characteristic of the area. Slim window frames are arranged in sequence to create the impression of a continuous opening, while maintaining fidelity to Tinian architectural typology. The solid marble frames, 8 cm thick, evoke the marble colonnades of ancient temples, establishing a conceptual link to the sanctuary of Delos. Auxiliary ventilation openings are designed as slit-like embrasures, and the skylights—marble lintels—reinforce continuity with the island’s vernacular architecture.
The protected outdoor courtyard and the pergola form an integral part of the architectural proposal, enhancing both the living experience and the residence’s functionality. The pool is framed with marble coping, and the rainwater drainage system features marble grates and plastered stone gutters, in full harmony with the project’s overall design philosophy.
The study lasted six months and was unanimously approved by the Architectural Council upon its initial presentation. Construction took approximately two and a half years and was completed in May 2024.
The successful realization of the project is credited to the close collaboration among all contributors, with a central role played by civil engineer Athanasios Kontizas and the construction team led by Nikos Desypris-Chatzis. The project strikes a balance between the old and the new, geometry and landscape, responding to the demands of contemporary living while engaging in a continuous dialogue with the Tinian land.
