PATIO HOUSE
Located in the area of Marousi in Athens, Greece, the residence is a response to the challenge of accommodating a young family within a limited footprint. Completed in July 2023 the project demanded a meticulous examination of scale and proportion owing to the constrained dimensions of its site.
Comprising three floors and a basement, the residence offers three bedrooms, of modest dimensions arranged to optimize spatial efficiency while ensuring a comfortable living environment.
The plot is located between two existing buildings.
The central concept when placing the building was to establish a clear boundary between the new structure and its neighboring plots. This was achieved through the positioning of structural concrete walls along the borders of the long sides of the building. These walls not only serve as a boundary but also create a distinct contrast with the transparency of the short sides where tall openings were placed on the northwestern façade to allow natural light to penetrate into the interior spaces, creating a sense of openness and connection with the surrounding environment.
Another focal point of the Residence is the patio that enhances the double height ceiling in the living room and naturally illuminates the interior spaces. The patio serves as a multifunctional outdoor space, seamlessly integrating with the interior living areas while also providing a connection to nature. Bordering to the patio lies a small swimming pool that leads to the terrace, further enhancing the indoor-outdoor connection. Τhe transition from indoor to outdoor spaces blurs the boundaries between the built environment and the natural world. Despite the compact size of the site, the interior spaces extend visually into the outdoors, creating a sense of expansiveness.
Additionally, the reflections cast by the water onto the concrete walls add depth and dimension to the space, creating an interplay of light and texture. Patio house serves as an exploration of how to make the most of limited space when designing in urban environments.
