Located in the Laurentians, this residence was designed for a family seeking retreat from the everyday hustle, favoring an understated architecture that blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings.
Set within dense vegetation on a rugged site, the project reveals itself gradually from the access road through a carefully choreographed sequence. The siting strategy minimized deforestation and preserved the existing ecosystem, ensuring that the house integrates with the landscape rather than competing with it.
The design reinterprets Quebec’s vernacular architecture, drawing inspiration from the archetypal gabled house. A simple rectangular volume with a pitched roof is reimagined here as three distinct entities, strategically positioned to frame two visual corridors toward the lake. This division also enhances functionality and provides varied relationships to the surrounding landscape. A restrained material palette reinforces the project’s simplicity, timelessness, and contextual sensitivity.
A covered passageway is created by the separation between the garage and the main entrance, offering a first glimpse of the lake. Inside, a peripheral circulation axis ensures fluid movement throughout the home. As one progresses through the residence, openings expand in size, blurring the line between interior and exterior. The common areas extend naturally toward the covered terrace of the third volume, where the placement of the fireplace anchors the social spaces: buffering the energy of the kitchen and dining area while maintaining the calm atmosphere of the living room. Wooden ceilings contribute warmth and a sense of grounding, while every design gesture emphasizes continuity with the site rather than formal imposition.
On the lower level, the character shifts. Conceived as a single, more intimate volume, the garden floor houses the retreat spaces. Darker finishes create an enveloping atmosphere of calm, while large openings frame views that allow nature to permeate the private interiors. Materials were chosen to echo the surrounding landscape, capturing changing shades throughout the day as light animates the surfaces in a dynamic play of shadow and reflection.
This project is an exercise in restraint and contextual engagement—an architecture that deliberately recedes to highlight the presence of nature, while offering spaces of comfort, fluidity, and retreat.
