Hidden within the treed and rocky landscape this one-story cottage sits elevated above the water, taking advantage of framed vistas while creating a private retreat for its owners.
The form of the cottage emerges from its unique site condition by taking advantage of two engaging views of the lake that point in opposite directions. These views sculpt the form of the cottage by creating a directional and dynamic shape specifically tailored to the surrounding scenery. Both directional edges of the form cantilever where the rocky hillside falls away towards the water edge, emphasizing the design’s dynamism and pull towards these expansive vistas. On the opposite side, more private and intimate views face the treed hillside of the site, creating the feeling of being nestled within the landscape while adding balance to the overall design.
Weathered steel clads the facade, allowing the exterior to age with its surroundings as the steel naturally rusts and oxidizes over time. This naturally weathering façade adding an organic and tactile feel to the overall design while further immersing the cottage into its surrounding landscape.
