BRIEF Conversion. Office accomodation for 50 workers | ADDED VALUE Stepping out of the elevator at kadawittfeldarchitektur, one finds oneself in a sky lounge: a colorful sofa arrangement, a book shelf “room divider,” a coffee bar, and a panoramic view over Aachen greet the visitor and invite the employees to unwind. It’s a public space “en miniature”: the classic office space – i.e., the reception desk and work areas – is only discovered after a closer look.KW8, AACHEN | GERMANY The top floor of a 1970s office building was mostly gutted and liberated from all interior fittings. From the original two-linking cell structures, supposedly the only thing remaining was the 60 meter long steel reinforced concrete wall supporting the building. The characteristics of the space are defined by both the raw wall, which was cleaned and stripped of all lining, and the high glossy black epoxy resin floor. Massive partition walls were deliberately left out; the zoning of the open plan space takes shape only through its interior furnishings. According the needs of each, the 650 square meter space is equipped with a mix of serial and custom-made furniture. Distinctive areas are defined by the variations in scale in the furniture, without obstructing the unique panoramic view onto Aachen’s historic old town. The complete reduction in the materials, colors, and furniture used in each area, in addition to the customized lighting, enables a creative work space in a field of tension between concentration and inspiration.
