In
2005, The City University of New York selected the award wining firm
TEK Architects of Manhattan to renovate and design an addition to the
Harriet and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives
located on the Queensborough Community College Campus. The center is
now open to the public, having held its official opening on October 18,
2009. The KHRCA is designed to house exhibition space, education
programs, archival documents and create space for presentations,
concerts and other various auditorium uses. The addition is clad in
glass with a roof and a detached wall that functions as a sun screen.
Other materials include zinc, steel, concrete, and Jerusalem Stone. A
terrace overlooking the campus provides an extension of the building
for outdoor performances and gatherings, and at night the structure
glows, articulated by different glass types, and serves as a sort of
glowing lantern like beacon on a hill.
