As smart home technology gradually shifts from a novelty to an everyday experience, the focus of spatial design is evolving as well. Rather than simply emphasizing an ever-expanding range of smart features, attention is shifting toward integrating technology seamlessly into everyday life and redefining the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit. For a long time, smart living has been defined by voice control, intelligent adjustment, and scenario-based automation. Yet as lifestyles evolve, users are beginning to expect a more holistic experience—one that goes beyond efficiency to foster comfort, emotional well-being, and a quiet sense of order in everyday life.
In this context, STILL YOUNG designed a showroom for KUKA|JOY series—the flagship smart furniture collection within KUKA’s integrated home solutions system—around the concept of “Gravitational Nest,” crafting a spatial narrative centered on future lifestyles. Rather than foregrounding technology, the design reorganizes the relationship between people and products. The products’ functional innovations—such as zero-gravity support, wall-independent design, and high-leg structures—are translated into immersive experiences that align with the rhythms of contemporary living. Technology is quietly woven into the spatial settings and circulation, while comfort unfolds naturally through moments of pause, sitting, reclining, and movement.
In this sense, the project is not simply a showcase of smart products, but an exploration of how the perception of “home” is reshaped as technology becomes embedded in everyday life. Here, KUKA’s smart furniture innovations are presented through curated living & dining settings, offering an immersing experience shaped by everyday rituals.
From Product Display to an Experiential Journey: The “Gravitational Nest” Concept
The spatial strategy begins with a renewed understanding of core user needs. The KUKA|JOY series is not aimed at a single consumer profile, but rather embraces a range of contemporary families with different lifestyle preferences. Some prioritize shared family life and a sense of order; others emphasize aesthetic expression and social interaction; while still others focus on efficiency and convenience enabled by technology.
These varied lifestyle tendencies shape different ways of perceiving space. With this in mind, the space unfolds through multiple thematic scenarios—family gathering, entertainment and leisure, rest and relaxation, and home working—each articulated through variations in materiality, scale, and functional organization, reflecting diverse states of everyday life.
Within this framework, the “Gravitational Nest” becomes a spatial approach that orchestrates the transitions between scenarios, reframing the relationship between products, technology, and everyday life.
Into the Space: The Unfolding of Everyday Scenarios
From the façade onward, the space establishes a unified and restrained visual language. KUKA’s brand motif is reinterpreted as a gradually dispersing pattern, while metallic surfaces and luminous panels create layered depth—lending the entrance a sense of order with a subtle technological undertone.
Upon entering through the main entrance, visitors first encounter the new and signature product zones. The new product area adopts a modular configuration to highlight featured products, inviting pause and creating an immediate first impression. The signature product zone unfolds as an open display, allowing visitors to quickly browse best-selling pieces and gain an understanding of the collection’s overall aesthetic identity. Together, these two areas establish the first layer of experience and naturally guide visitors toward the immersive scenario zones beyond.
In contrast to the main entrance’s structured experiential sequence, the secondary entrance offers a more open sense of arrival. At its center, the “Gravitational Nest” installation reinterprets K-TRON® Space Z—KUKA’s self-developed zero-gravity steel structural system and one of its four patented sofa technologies—in a transparent and sculptural form, becoming the visual anchor of the entire space.
Around the installation, single chairs are displayed in a loose arrangement, creating a shared space for lingering and interaction.
Three key lifestyle scenarios unfold continuously throughout the space, each corresponding to a distinct state of everyday living and an imagined mode of product use. The “rest and relaxation” zone employs warm hues and refined materials, creating an intimate, cocoon-like atmosphere. In contrast, the “family gathering” area emphasizes domestic warmth and everyday order, with soft whites, warm greys, and natural textures shaping a gentle, relaxed environment, where sharing and companionship naturally become central themes.
The “entertainment and leisure” zone highlights social interaction and aesthetic expression. Here, a curated dining-and-living room setting extends beyond everyday domestic life, accommodating social gatherings and guest reception. A restrained material palette and precise detailing define a quiet sense of modern luxury and Italian-inspired minimalism.
The “home working” scenario shifts toward a more rational, technology-driven experience, highlighting how smart systems integrate into everyday life. A palette of black, white, grey, and natural wood sets the tone, while digital interfaces and crisp linear geometry reinforce technological expression. Here, smart interaction becomes part of the spatial experience itself—woven seamlessly into the rhythm of daily living.
Rather than emphasizing “smart features” in a conventional sense, the KUKA|JOY series prioritizes comfort as an everyday experience. From head and neck support to lumbar and leg relaxation, the products respond to high-frequency usage scenarios such as sitting, resting, movie-watching, and working through adaptive structures and enveloping ergonomic support. Comfort is not merely softness—it is a precise system of support that allows relaxation to occur naturally across different postures and modes of use.
The technology display area combines an illuminated stretch ceiling with linear stainless-steel frames, establishing a clear and disciplined spatial order. A central wooden island counter introduces warmth, acting as a natural pause along the circulation and guiding visitors from technological understanding toward experiential engagement. Core components—such as foam, steel frame, and leather—are deconstructed and presented in an intuitive way, transforming technology from a passive exhibit into an active connector between product, space, and everyday experience.
The VIP service area is conceived as a home-like social setting, where services blend naturally into the spatial experience. Its open layout, inspired by the spatial logic of a living-and-dining room, dissolves the boundaries of conventional service spaces, creating a warm, enveloping environment in which interaction, lingering, and exploration occur naturally.
Rooted in the “Gravitational Nest” concept, the project goes beyond the display of smart home products to explore how technology reshapes the experience of everyday living. As functionality recedes into the background, the space becomes a medium for a more lived-in sense of everyday life—where comfort, order, and emotion quietly emerge and linger.
In this context, “intelligence” is no longer a feature to be emphasized, but a quiet presence that subtly supports everyday life. It brings “home” back to its essence: a place to be inhabited, lingered in, and felt over time.
