New school building in the Kreuzviertel district, constructed using modular timber construction – in collaboration with our partner Kleusberg
With the construction of the new Kreuz Primary School, the City of Dortmund is creating much-needed school space, whilst adopting a responsible, climate-adapted and urbanistically sensitive approach within the historic setting of the Kreuzviertel.
The successful implementation of educational architecture in accordance with the Dortmund School Building Guidelines is achieved through a compact building layout with a minimal proportion of circulation areas. Although a four-storey structure would have been permitted, the design therefore makes do with three storeys. Furthermore, the new building’s volume is noticeably smaller than the specified building plot. The design thus responds to the sensitive surroundings and enables the building to be integrated into the existing development in a restrained manner.
A key architectural feature is the south-facing façade of the new building, which faces the school playground and the historic old building. This façade provides open access via balconies and roof terraces, giving it a lively, detailed appearance that promotes both openness and a pleasant environment for spending time. This is because the access areas can also be used as an extension of the learning spaces. These elements also improve shading, ventilation and the microclimate in the school playground area.
The design was selected not least because of its resource-efficient construction method. The project will be carried out using timber modular and system construction; the building will be insulated using renewable insulation materials, whilst timber-aluminium windows and exposed timber surfaces in the interior complete the sustainable atmosphere, which also promotes a healthy indoor climate. Taken as a whole, this project makes an effective contribution to climate adaptation and the sustainable development of the site.
