Context/Program- Two adjoining one bedroom apartments (front and back) in the Historic District of Brooklyn Heights, converting the new larger apartment into a one bedroom with a home office, open kitchen, and playland for three cats.
At 7' above the floor, a horizontal datum is established around the entire apartment. In the center, the datum becomes the 'catwalk,' a horizontal plane one foot in width, which cantilevers from the wall by concealed steel brackets. The walk has three integral 'stairs' at each end and the middle, and a number of special features. In the bedroom, it drops down across a window to provide a perch for bird watching. It can pass between the bedroom, home office, and entry area on its own by way of elevated 'cat-doors,' and widens along the apartment's corridor to provide a more ample hang out area.
