A light-filled, airy “treehouse” on the third floor of this stone Mt. Airy twin. We raised the roof, added a 15-foot-long window, a spa bathroom, and a dressing room. We worked with artist Julia Blaukopf to create a tree photo mural spanning two rooms that echoed the 60-foot-tall trees right outside the bedroom windows.

A communal fire pit in an urban backyard. Social spaces such as this one encourage communication and set the stage for serendipitous events by playing with scale, enclosure and materials. In this case, a fire pit creates a focal point around which many people can gather. A permeable fence enclosure with four-foot-diameter “moon gate” allows views both into and out of the space, promoting conversation between passersby and the people inside. The illuminated tree adjacent to the circular moon gate opening visually extends the perimeter, while the table in the foreground creates an enclosure for diners beneath the shelter of a tree. These manipulations create multiple kinds of space within this 375 SF area.
