The pavilion for the new kindergarten of Dotzigen is a modestly scaled project that dialogues to the point of blending into the forest near the site. At the same time, it dialogues with the existing buildings creating a schoolyard. The project is in a tension between opposites: nature and artificial.
The project is classical in its appearance: base, body and crowning. Its ordered plan, the repetition of the module. The structure is carefully staged: pillars and beams. The transparency on both sides emphasises the structure and makes it diaphanous and levitating.
Static and silent, the pavilion tries to be ‘almost nothing’. Blending in with the wooded surroundings. As in most of the office’s projects, the materials are laid bare, allowing time to stain their age and the intrinsic nature of their character to flourish. They show what they are, without make-up.
