The project funded through corporate and citizen funding was a unique initiative to restore a Jewish synagogue that was in need of repair with leakages in the roof and structural distress. With the Jewish population of Mumbai less than 500 people, the non Jewish community of the city came together to contribute to the conservation of this heritage building. The major donors were JSW Foundation and Sangita Jindal and the local citizen association of Kala Ghoda Foundation. The World Monuments Fund helped restore the stained glass in the synagogue. Peeling off layers of oil paint revealed the original Victorian colour palette that the building interiors were restored to. Turn of the century synagogue built in renaissance revival style in the art district of the colonial city of Bombay. One of the few the project is the restoration of structure and interiors with exquisite stained glass and original stenciling.
