The project to conserve Kashmir's oldest Mughal Garden has been a pioneering initiative of a corporate foundation supporting the conservation of a state archaeological monument. Through the support of JSW Foundation the project has envisaged a 5 year programme in conserving the historic Mughal pavillions built in mud, timber and stone using traditional Kashmiri practices and employing local Kashmir artisans. Built in the 17th century by the Mughal emperor Jahangir, Shalimar Bagh is one of the most famous Mughal gardens in India. The garden is laid out in four terraces, each representing a different level of paradise, and it is adorned with exquisite water channels, fountains, and meticulously manicured flower beds.
