Toshin Preparatory school in Kobe takes advantage from its location in a very busy shopping street to exhibit its functional yet “cute” design through the glass wall like a display window. The high density of girl’s high-schools around echoed in the design of Toshin orienting it toward the Japanese girly concept of “Kawaii” (mostly translated to cute however the concept is broader). To attract more teenage girls into this school, a series of pentagon shaped spaces was aligned along the one floor facade. These pentagon shaped spaces refers to the gabled roof houses found in children’s illustrated houses. These pentagons were then made irregular to add more innocent and kawaii atmosphere to the spaces. Every pentagon houses a function, a conference room, a corridor, an information counter and three multifunctional booth rooms all in different colorful micro spaces. The corridor leads to the office and the more spacious classrooms.
