COOOP is proud to collaborate with Karakoram International University (KIU) in Gilgit, Pakistan, to design a dynamic educational environment that reflects the unique mountainous context of the region. Established in 2002, KIU is dedicated to training and education focused on mountain environment and resource development, providing students with contextual relevance and field-based experience. Situated amidst the stunning landscape where the Gilgit and Hunza rivers meet, the main campus of KIU offers a dramatic backdrop of steep mountains, fostering an inspiring atmosphere for learning and exploration.
With sub-campuses in Hunza, Diamer, and Khizer, KIU promotes diversity and accessibility throughout the province. The university comprises three faculties: Life Sciences, Natural Sciences & Engineering, and Humanities and Social Sciences, offering a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate degree programs.
In line with its commitment to local and indigenous studies, KIU provides courses in Gem-stones cutting, Jewelry designing, Wood-cutting, Wood-crafting, and Mining techniques. Additionally, the university addresses the needs of modern times by offering programs such as Forestry, Pasture-management, Grassland-management, Mining engineering, and Geological engineering.
COOOP's design for KIU's campus aims to enhance the learning experience by integrating elements of the natural surroundings and fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Through thoughtful design and planning, COOOP seeks to create an environment that not only facilitates academic excellence but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage and environmental significance of the region.
