K-G Storage and Home Office System

New York, NY, United States

The K-G Home Office is a custom modular desk, storage, display, and lighting system executed in laser sintered nylon, steel, and white oak.

A series of laser-cut and lacquered steel storage elements serve as the primary structure of the unit supporting long shaped planks of rift cut white oak. The storage volumes can be spaced at regular or random intervals and are anchored to the wall, allowing the wood shelves to float off the surface.

Sliding 3D printed doors allow for the screening of storage elements and also act as diffusers for integral LED lighting.

The design of the system is inspired in part by the work of Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé who collaborated on a series of wood, steel, and plastic shelving systems in the early 1950s, making use of industrial materials and assembling them in beautiful and structurally beguiling ways.

The K-G system makes use of the precision afforded by digitally controlled cutting, bending, and welding in the forming
of the structural steel storage elements, and in current advances in 3D printing. The sliding doors of the storage elements are printed using Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) printing methods. The doors’ geometry was developed with visual porosity and structural stiffness in
mind using a single interwoven surface. The complexity of the geometry greatly reduces the amount of material and cost associated with multiple layers or the bulky thickness that would be required for stiffness and durability.

The resulting lacy undulating surface not only allows for the delicate play of light, but also creates opportunities to introduce integral handles in the surface. Printing also allows for the sliding mechanism of the door to be
entirely contained within the door itself, ensuring that no visible metal or plastic track is required for smooth operation. The shelves are simply cut with a groove for the door to slide within.

A larger printed panel serves as a screen for a desktop computer. Additional storage elements executed in white oak house home office supplies and the electrical components for the LED lighting strips that illuminate each storage element. The shelves contain grooves for the management of electrical or
audiovisual cabling.

The unit is available by special order and in multiple configurations from MKCA. Professional installation is required.
