Hangzhou’s Jiuxi, with its lush hills and winding waterways, is a place where nature and the city quietly converge.
This 500-square-meter private residence in Jiuxi Rose Garden offers a serene retreat, defined by a quiet sense of seclusion and understated elegance. It reveals a way of living that finds balance within the embrace of the natural surroundings.
Here, liveliness and subtlety emerge through finely crafted details. Each space refrains from self-assertion, instead engaging in a gentle dialogue with nature, and imbuing everyday living with a sense of balance and harmony.
01 Secluded in the Landscape
The courtyard extends the architecture into its natural surroundings. A stone path meanders like a quiet stream, leading toward the residence veiled in soft greenery. The podocarpus tree stands in composed stillness as light filters through its sparse canopy, casting dappled, shifting patterns across the ground.
02 In Dialogue with Nature
The living room opens visually to the courtyard, where greenery and light flow freely between inside and out. The boundary between interior and exterior is dissolved, revealing the gentle rhythm of the four seasons.
Light drifts across the expansive floor-to-ceiling window, while the Signoretto lamp rises from the floor, introducing a gentle, layered rhythm that resonates with the courtyard’s organic vitality.
A deep gray sofa anchors the room with quiet composure, paired with a warm ochre armchair reminiscent of autumn leaves scattered through a forest. At the center, a tea table combines raw wood grain with metal textures, its delicate veining carrying the quiet imprint of time.
In one corner, a tea area unfolds with deliberate simplicity. A wooden tea table, a teapot, and a few cups define the setting. Whether in the soft mist of morning or the gentle glow of night, this intimate space evokes the unhurried poetry of Eastern living.
The dining room and kitchen share a relatively open layout, connected through a fluid circulation. A glass sliding door separates the two zones, preserving visual openness while meeting the practical needs of everyday life.
Soft leather chairs surround a round dining table, while cascading pendant lights above bathe the space in a soft, diffused glow.
Tucked discreetly into a corner of the ground floor, the study stays quietly open. The natural grain of the wooden desk and shelving forms a subtle dialogue, while the greenery outside the window offers quiet inspiration for reading and reflection.
03 A Quiet Embrace of Time
A corridor softly connects public and private areas, where shifting light dances across the walls and floor, orchestrating a quiet rhythm of everyday life. Warm stone flooring and clean wall contours strike a delicate balance, while a glimpse of greenery at the corridor’s end brings a sense of vitality and anticipation.
The staircase features a sculptural handrail, complemented by wood textures and marble surfaces to create a strong visual presence.
The family lounge serves as the heart of daily interaction and rest. Behind the sofa, a quiet display shelf holds art books and family memories, its understated presence carrying a sense of gentle warmth.
A soft fabric sofa curves gently, complemented by a dark-toned tea table—simple in form yet rich in texture, lending the space a grounded sense of calm.
The master bedroom unfolds as a private sanctuary of calm and elegance. Gentle daylight filters through sheer curtains, falling softly onto the chestnut-toned wooden floor. Warm white walls feel serene and restrained, echoing softly with the pendant light beside the bed.
By the floor-to-ceiling window, an amber armchair faces a creamy lounge chair, with a small table in between, smooth and gentle like polished jade. Outside, pine shadows sway—an ever-changing natural tableau that fills the room with greenery, subtle fragrance, and contemplative calm.
The guest bedroom continues the home’s natural palette with clarity and simplicity. The softly curved warm-brown headboard echoes the wall’s soft textures, creating a restrained yet harmonious composition.
A casually placed painting leans against the wall, contrasting with the sleek chair beside it. Their interplay adds an artistic tension, capturing an effortless balance between spontaneity and refinement.
04 A Haven for Inspiration
On the third floor, the studio becomes a place where nature and art quietly converge. A drawing table stands at the center, surrounded by an easel, palettes, and pigments. Outside the window, layers of greenery filter the sunlight as it pours gently in. The space is quiet, pure, and alive with inspiration.
This home feels like a silent encounter between nature and daily life. The Daoist refection on “lasting and enduring” finds tangible form here, woven into the textures of materials and the gentle flow of light. In this sanctuary, life unfolds with ease, and every inch of space carries a sense of calm and ease.
