Proposed Rooftop Addition to the Edith and Carl Marks Jewish Community House of Bensonhurst, a single story community facility building constructed in 1926 and designed by Segal & Sohn, Malkind & Weinstein.
Our addition was to be realized in two halves: Phase I would be at the south half of the roof and consist of new classrooms for the JCHB's Early Childhood Center. Phase II would then take the north half of the roof to expand on the JCHB's Health & Wellness programs with new Exercise Studios and Locker Rooms. Phase II would also included expanded egress capacity as required for the significant increase to occupant load.
The addition was designed to complement the existing historic architecture: modern steel & glass windows located in the same bays as the existing glazing below, surrounded by a cream-colored terra cotta rainscreen cladding system, whose color, texture & joinery referenced the original Jerusalem Stone entrance portico.
