Jagielloński Square is one of Radom's main squares. Its present spatial shape dates back to the 1950s, when a small park was established on the site of the former market square. The park is somewhat neglected today. The surfaces of the alleys are in a bad technical condition, the pavements are cracked and deformed by tree roots. There are few benches. Due to the density of the crowns, parts of the grassland tend to disappear. A development project for an area of approximately 1.5 ha was carried out in 2022.
The basic assumptions and objectives of the project are:
- Creating an attractive space intended for different groups of users, both local residents and people living in distant districts of Radom,
- Introducing a varied recreational programme surrounded by greenery,
- Exposing the rich and multilayered history (genius loci),
- Activating and supporting local shops,
- Enriching the natural environment - renaturalisation of urban space with native species, preservation of vegetated areas subject to dynamic natural processes, increasing biodiversity, ecological education.
"Via Regia" is the name of a medieval trade route stretching from Spain all the way to Russia, in Western Europe often led along the traces of even older roads built by Roman legions. For centuries, it was used by court officials, merchant caravans, pilgrims and vagabonds in times of peace, and by armies and marauders in times of war. It was not until the 19th century development of the railways that the route lost its importance. In order to commemorate the section of the route that ran through Jagiellonian Square, we decided to incorporate plaques with the names of the towns to which the route led into the new pavement at the ends of the park avenue.
