To celebrate the 100th anniversary of writer Jack Kerouac’s birth, the Jack Kerouac Foundation launched a campaign to create a museum and performing arts center in his hometown Lowell, Massachusetts. SCB partnered with the Foundation to study potential sites, develop a program, and design a vision for the project. The historic Saint Jean Baptiste Church—central to Kerouac’s early life and the site of his funeral—was selected for its deep personal and cultural ties. SCB’s concept transforms the church into a dynamic venue featuring a 1,000-seat performance hall, 18,000-square-foot museum, café, bookstore, and community spaces. A new, light-filled glass addition contrasts the church’s heavy masonry, reflecting Kerouac’s lifelong push-and-pull with his Catholic roots. A dramatic stair, inspired by the scroll in On the Road, connects the levels. The adjacent rectory is planned as a future boutique hotel, completing the vision for a cultural campus rooted in Kerouac’s legacy.
