Ixmukané is conceived as an exercise to create a space that fosters community, based on the premise of low-cost design. Located in the historic center of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, this project presents a contemporary reading and embraces maximum simplicity, integrating elements of the old structure while surprising with the energy and variety of its textures.
Ixmukané offers an alternative for exploring the city, immersed in a colonial setting with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. It houses four suites and two spa cabins on the ground floor, connected by a double-height space that serves as a coworking area, snack bar, and coffee counter. The second level features four suites and an administrative office, accompanied by an open void that provides a panoramic view of the entire complex. The original wooden trim of the building takes center stage, complemented by the neutrality of polished concrete and the warmth of exposed brick.
Ixmukané is rooted in architecture that inherently fosters exchange—not just with one reality, but with many, capable of multiplying connections and interactions. The austerity of the space serves as an analogy to the purity of the soul, reflecting what Ixmukané offers its users: a chance to silence a world full of noise (visual, auditory, of activities, movements) and transform it into a sudden, healing silence.
Using only the necessary space and materials, Ixmukané celebrates and respects the challenges faced by modern tourist cities. It provides all the essentials for a comfortable stay, offering users an opportunity to soothe the soul. With industrial influences but purist traits, this complex aims to avoid the transient and ephemeral, focusing instead on the unchangeable—the essence of the real. The honesty of the materials and the rawness of the space create an environment open to a new order.
