The goal of our project is to design and transform an entire fragment of the city — an island located across from the former Silk Factory in the town of Naro-Fominsk, Moscow Region, surrounded by the Nara River and man-made canals. Here, we are creating an environment that matches the atmosphere of the historical part of the city and incorporates the natural landscape.
Our project is about life by the river and interaction with it. We began with the concept of embankments and public spaces, the creation of which requires extensive work with the landscape and the existing ecosystem: cleaning the river, revealing the canal, creating a wetland park, and more.
The diversity of the riverside landscape has defined the varying character of the embankments and, accordingly, the building typologies and heights — from city houses to high-rise buildings — in different parts of the island, where scenic views of the water can be enjoyed throughout.
We have also developed various movement scenarios that consider diverse modes and directions of movement, from pedestrian promenades along winding streets to bike rides along dedicated paths.
Our island is a continuation of a large-scale, integrated project for the redevelopment and reprogramming of the former factory area, which — thanks to the well-designed embankment and numerous water-related activities — is becoming an alternative urban center.
Uniqueness: A long-term, 20-year phased development of the area as a compact urban district within the context of revitalization, initiated by the project's developer. A project comparable in scale and ambition to HafenCity, where the existing landscape and spatial character served as a key starting point.
