Located on Bowen Island, this small family retreat sits atop an extraordinary rocky cliff above the ocean. Originally built in the 1950’s, the cabin has since undergone four renovations. Our task was to reimagine the arrangement of the main living space and bring a sense of cohesion to the to the entire house. This required a little imagination in working with the original bones of the structure while ensuring the finished house would conform to current, more stringent building requirements.
A driving thought behind the project was to maintain the relaxed cabin vibes while opening up the space to the landscape and ocean views. By stripping the home down to the essentials and re-working the floor plan, we were able to enhance the flow between spaces, and create an open, airy feel. In turn, the spectacular views were given precedence, particularly in the main spaces, with a true appreciation for the closeness and abundance of nature.
The result is a pleasant and calming escape from bustling city life, particularly with its spare material palette of oak, concrete, and Douglas fir plywood. Simple white walls and black hardware add contrast, while retaining a sense of minimalism.
