The Britannia Beach House is a warm, cozy, and minimal home that frames some of the most picturesque views in the province. The site sits at the end of a drive, adjacent to the forest and overlooking spectacular views of Howe Sound and the surrounding mountains just beyond. The house was designed to take advantage of its immense natural surroundings, and the many viewpoints to enjoy throughout the seasons. Oversized windows and doors create a sense of connection between nature and living.
The house inverts the typical residential layout by placing the kitchen, living and dining rooms on the upper floor, and instead locating the bedrooms on the entry level. This allows the living room to take advantage of the ocean views, while providing privacy to the forest-facing bedrooms. The house also features a secondary suite to provide flexibility for the family as well as an opportunity to house aging parents in the future.
Bringing together honest materials such as wood and concrete, there was a particular focus on the use of Douglas fir rafters and matching plywood in the vaulted areas of the main living space to bring a feeling of warmth and a sense of calm. The exterior is clad in 2x2 Cedar slats and contrasted with a matte black metal roof.
