How can a building with a theater program, be designed in an old urban context in one of the most important streets of the historic city of Iran, in the background of the existing shop facades?
How can this tendency of being hidden in an urban context, not showing off due to respect for historical values on the one hand, and displaying tendency in a theater, on the other hand, be aligned?
How can the tension of the project program against its geographical location -which has a rich cultural heritage and a deep-rooted history- be accompanied by each other?
What can be the relationship between the new building and the old urban commercial façade of “Chahar Bagh” Street?
What kind of spatial or urban relationship will the building have with “Chahar Bagh” Street, which has recently been turned into a pedestrian walkway?
In other words, our project strategy is to bury the main spaces and locate them on underground levels, thus, we can reduce the occupied area of the site on the ground floor, and consequently the ground floor plaza can be connected to the main urban pedestrian walkway of “Chahar bagh” Street through the covered alleys -which already exists or will be defined through demolishing some ruined shops afterward-.
This burial strategy generates a semi-open urban space and offers it to the city. While it is not noticeable at first glance in this façade-less project when you cross the covered alleys -and experience the spatial quality of a narrow path- you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a grand space that is a result of Iranian origin arches subtraction and can be a suitable area for any kind of social interactions or practicing various street art activities.
In designing this building, we tried to shift the volumetric features from the exterior of the project to its semi-open part and connect a magnificent semi-open interiority with a limited number of paths to the main street.
Saying the same thing in the other direction: from the accumulation and putting different theater halls on top of each other, we can reach a section diagram that not only organizes different types of theaters such as formal/experimental and collage performances/street performances or Black boxes in itself but also like “Tim” and “Timcheh” of “Bazaar”, can provide a shaded interiorities with natural ventilation for the city.
Moreover, since the project is located in the cultural context of the city, it can become a social platform for a community of art fans, and different theater artists’ associations, and a significant location to introduce artistic values or achievements to ordinary people.
